Polybutylene pipe replacement for homes that still have the original gray supply lines

Polybutylene was installed in homes across Marietta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Woodstock, Milton, and Atlanta from the late 1970s into the mid 1990s. Nolan Plumbing Services confirms what you actually have and plans a replacement with a clear scope and price before any wall is opened.

First we confirm it is really polybutylene

Plenty of gray pipe is not polybutylene, and some poly is not gray. We look at the pipe, the fittings, and the stamp before recommending anything.

When To Call

Signs a home may still be on polybutylene

Polybutylene degrades from the inside, so the outside of the pipe can look fine right up until a failure.

  • Gray, silver, or black flexible plastic supply pipe at the water heater or near the meter
  • A home inspection or insurance review that flagged polybutylene
  • Repeat leaks at fittings, or a leak that returns near an earlier repair
  • A house built or replumbed between roughly 1978 and 1995
What homeowners can expect
A replacement you can plan for, not an emergency you react to.
Identification first

We confirm the pipe material and how much of the system uses it before quoting a replacement.

Replace on your schedule

Planned replacement lets you control access points, timing, and budget instead of reacting to a burst line.

Whole-home or phased

If replacing everything at once is not practical, we lay out a phased plan and what each phase covers.

Repipe Request

Tell us what pipe you are seeing and we will confirm it

Share what you found and we will follow up to confirm the material and plan a replacement scope and price.

Note where you see the pipe, such as the water heater, the meter, or under a sink.
Include the city or address and roughly when the home was built.
A photo of the pipe and its fittings helps, but a short description is enough to start.

Polybutylene FAQs

Questions homeowners ask about polybutylene

These answers cover identifying polybutylene and deciding when to replace it.

How do I know if I have polybutylene pipe?

It is usually a flexible plastic supply pipe, most often gray but sometimes silver or black, and it is easiest to spot at the water heater, near the main shutoff, or at a sink stub-out. Many runs carry a stamp such as PB2110. We confirm it in person, because gray plastic alone is not proof.

Why does polybutylene fail?

Disinfectants in municipal water gradually break the material down from the inside, so the pipe can look sound from the outside while it weakens. Failures often show up at fittings and can happen without much warning.

Does polybutylene have to be replaced right away?

Not always. Plenty of homes still have it in service. The reason homeowners replace it on purpose is that a planned repipe is far less disruptive and less expensive than water damage from a line that lets go while nobody is home.

Will my insurer or a buyer care about it?

Both often do. Polybutylene is commonly flagged on home inspections, and some insurers ask about it. We can document what was replaced so you have a record for a policy or a sale.
